What kind of paint should I use to paint the outside frame of my aquarium?

Jellybino asked:

I want to paint the oak woodgrain base and frame above and below the glass black. Does it matter what kind of paint I use? Should I use a water based Acrylic paint? I will be taping/papering off the glass, so there shouldn’t be any paint at all that would come in contact with the water. I just don’t want to make it toxic for my future fishies.
